Welcome to the website of the New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine (NZCPHM). The NZCPHM is an incorporated association established to represent the specialty of public health medicine in New Zealand.
Public Health Medicine is a medical specialty which focuses on the health and healthcare needs of our population as a whole rather than individuals. This requires a multi-disciplinary approach working with colleagues in many areas of health and across social sectors.
Public health physicians are advocates for a healthy population and may have interests in one or more of the following areas:
· Communicable disease control and environmental health
· Primary care issues, e.g. public health support to PHOs
· Clinical governance and evidence based medicine
· Planning and information
· Academic public health, e.g. epidemiological research and critical appraisal
Public health physicians need to have undertaken specialist training. In New Zealand, this is provided by the NZ College of Public Health Medicine.
